What philosohpical things can one learn from the novel Nana by Emile Zola?

I believe in this novel Zola wanted to show that it is society itself that creates it's monsters. Nana is a woman with no regrets because no one ever cared for her and she shows no compion to anyone whatsoever. You can call her tough or monster but that was what everybody around her have made her. It also is a criticism of the hypocrisy of society when it comes to ethics.
