Is dishwashing detergent the same thing as what we call washing up liquid in the UK?

Am trying to make up a recipe to remove something from my carpet and the recipe is from an Australian website and they say to use dishwashing detergent, we only really have powder or tablet stuff for dishwashers here, so I wondered if they meant washing up liquid as that's what it looked like in the picture on the recipe! Hope someone can help!
